Description of DGR Active — Self-Foaming Alkaline Degreasing Detergent (Medium Alkalinity)

At Quimiconsult we manufacture DGR Active, a concentrated, self-foaming, medium-alkalinity alkaline degreasing detergent, formulated to remove grease and protein residues from production equipment, work tables, utensils, molds, facility surfaces, cages, livestock transport equipment, and process and storage tanks in the meat and dairy processing industries and, in general, any processing industry that handles fat and protein. As a chlorine-free alkaline degreasing soap, DGR Active dissolves animal and vegetable fat with its short-chain surfactants and alkaline capacity, without leaving corrosive chemical residue and without losing effectiveness in very hard water.

DGR Active is a medium-alkalinity liquid detergent (alkalinity 2.0 to 5.0%; pH 11.0 to 12.0 in a 1.0% solution) with high foam formation. Its self-foaming nature generates a dense foam layer that clings to vertical and inclined surfaces, increasing the degreaser's contact time without reapplication and improving coverage per square meter. Its short-chain surfactants allow it to work even in microcracks and joints where grease lodges. Because of its medium alkalinity —unlike a strong alkali with a pH above 13—, it removes grease with less aggressiveness toward surfaces and is easier to handle.

As direct manufacturers at our plant in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, we control every stage of formulation and production, with analytical verification of the alkalinity, pH and density of every batch. DGR Active is Kosher certified and comes with a technical data sheet (TDS) and safety data sheet (SDS). For anyone looking for a Mexican-made alkaline degreaser, degreasing soap, self-foaming alkaline soap, medium-alkalinity alkaline cleaner or chlorine-free liquid degreasing detergent, DGR Active is the technical answer in the Quimiconsult catalog.

What is an alkaline degreaser and what is it used for?

An alkaline degreaser is a product with a basic pH that removes greases and oils from surfaces through two mechanisms: saponification —the alkaline base reacts with the triglycerides of animal and vegetable fat and converts them into water-soluble compounds— and emulsification by surfactants, which surround the grease droplets that do not saponify and keep them dispersed so the rinse can carry them away. In the food industry, the alkaline degreaser is the main tool for removing the greasy residues that build up on equipment, work surfaces, floors, walls, cages and transport during production.

DGR Active is a medium-alkalinity alkaline degreaser (pH 11.0 to 12.0), which sets it apart both from strong alkaline detergents (sodium hydroxide, pH above 13, more aggressive toward surfaces and elastomers) and from neutral detergents (pH 6 to 9, lower degreasing power). This intermediate position combines good effectiveness on grease with a lower risk of damage to coatings, food-grade plastics and elastomers, and simpler handling than a strong alkali.

DGR Active technical characteristics

DGR Active is a slightly amber liquid concentrate, medium-alkalinity, self-foaming and chlorine-free. Its alkaline capacity and short-chain surfactants dissolve animal and vegetable fat without leaving corrosive chemical residue, and its high foam formation prolongs the product's contact with the surface. A relevant operational advantage is that its activity is not reduced in the presence of very hard water, a common condition in northern Mexico, where tap water is usually hard; this prevents the loss of performance caused by the detergent being consumed by water hardness. In addition, for demanding jobs there is no need to add extra alkaline agents to the DGR Active solution.

Because it contains no chlorine, DGR Active avoids the risks and restrictions associated with chlorinated alkaline detergents: it does not generate corrosive hypochlorite residue, it simplifies handling and storage, and it does not require checking for chlorine residues on the surface before resuming production. When the process requires a disinfection step, DGR Active is complemented with a sanitizer applied in a later step (see "The cleaning and sanitation program").

How does DGR Active work? Mechanism of the self-foaming alkaline degreaser

DGR Active exerts its degreasing action through mechanisms that work simultaneously on the surface:

Alkaline saponification of fats. The alkaline component reacts with the triglycerides of animal and vegetable fats and converts them into water-soluble compounds. Once saponified, the fat does not redeposit on the surface.

Emulsification by short-chain surfactants. The surfactants surround the grease droplets that do not saponify, emulsify them in the wash solution and prevent their redeposition. Their short chain allows them to penetrate microcracks and joints where grease lodges.

Adhesion through active foam. The self-foaming formulation generates a dense foam layer that keeps the detergent in contact with the surface long enough for saponification and emulsification to act, without the product running off prematurely on vertical or inclined surfaces.

Suspension and removal in the rinse. The loosened organic residues remain suspended in the wash solution and are removed in the water rinse, preventing their redeposition on the already clean surface.

Where DGR Active fits: surfaces and facilities (not CIP)

A key technical decision when selecting a detergent is the application method and foam level. DGR Active is high-foaming (self-foaming), so it is designed for cleaning surfaces, equipment and facilities by foaming, spraying, immersion and scrubbing —COP (Clean Out of Place) and open-surface cleaning—, where the clinging foam prolongs contact with the soil. Because of its high foam, DGR Active is not a detergent for closed-loop CIP recirculation (excessive foam affects recirculation pumps).

Within the Quimiconsult catalog, this places it as follows:

  • Chlorine-free surface and facility cleaning (foam): DGR Active (medium alkalinity, for grease and protein on surfaces, equipment and livestock transport) and Alkaplus (stronger self-foaming alkaline for heavier soil). DGR Active is the medium-alkalinity option, gentler on sensitive surfaces; Alkaplus is the higher-alkalinity option for more severe loads.
  • CIP cleaning (recirculation, low foam): when the process requires a closed-loop alkaline, the solution is CLK Premium (chlorinated alkaline for CIP, ideal in dairy because of the protein) or Alkaflow CIP300 (chlorine-free CIP alkaline, e.g. for breweries).
  • Acid cycle / descaling: for mineral scale (limescale, milkstone) an acid detergent such as Lactac is used — a different function from that of an alkaline degreaser like DGR Active.

DGR Active industries and applications

DGR Active is indicated for removing grease and protein from surfaces, equipment and facilities in the food industry. Concentration and method are validated according to the type of soil, the surface and the grease load.

Meat industry: surfaces, equipment and livestock transport

The meat industry generates demanding loads of animal fat and protein. Cutting surfaces, stainless steel work tables, saws, conveyor belts, molds, cages and livestock transport equipment accumulate animal fat, blood and tissue that require an alkaline degreaser to remove. DGR Active, applied by foamer or spray at 2 – 5%, acts on these residues without the need for chlorine, which simplifies the cleaning protocol and avoids corrosive hypochlorite residue on equipment with sensitive components.

Dairy and dairy products industry

In dairy processing, milk fat, butter and cheese deposit on tables, molds, surfaces and conveying systems. DGR Active removes these fats during manual cleaning, foaming or spraying, acting as a complement to the CIP program on equipment and surfaces that are not part of the recirculation circuit. Its Kosher certification makes it suitable for plants with religious traceability requirements for cleaning supplies.

Facility surfaces, cages and utensils

Beyond the main equipment, facilities accumulate grease on floors, walls, drains, cages, tables and small utensils. Thanks to its self-foaming formulation and application by foamer or manual scrubbing, DGR Active is suitable for deep cleaning these surfaces during periodic maintenance, with a lower risk of surface damage than a strong alkali and simpler handling.

Process and storage tanks, molds and equipment

DGR Active is used as a general-purpose alkaline soap for cleaning process and storage tanks, molds and equipment where fatty materials are handled, in the food industry and in general in any processing industry that handles fat and protein. Its hard water compatibility and absence of chlorine make it suitable for facilities where corrosive hypochlorite residue is a concern.

DGR Active directions for use and dosage

Dose: 2 to 5% in water, depending on the work area and the amount of grease on the surfaces. For light soil, the low end of the range is usually enough; for heavier loads, the high end. For demanding work there is no need to add alkaline agents beyond the product itself.

Recommended method — foamer: this is the preferred application, because it covers the largest possible area of equipment and facilities at the lowest cost. Apply the foam to the surface, let it act and rinse.

Other methods: spraying, immersion of utensils and removable parts, and manual scrubbing with a brush or scouring pad. In all cases, the product rinses off easily with water at room temperature. Using warm water can speed up the saponification of saturated fats when the load is high.

Good practices: finish every cycle with a complete rinse with potable water to remove alkaline residues before resuming production or applying the sanitizer. Quimiconsult's technical team helps define the optimal method and concentration for each surface and type of soil.

The cleaning and sanitation program

DGR Active is the cleaning (grease and protein removal) stage on surfaces and facilities. A complete program continues with disinfection, carried out in a later step with a dedicated sanitizer. Quimiconsult manufactures and supplies the products for each stage:

  • Surface cleaning with DGR Active (foaming, spraying, immersion or scrubbing), to remove grease and protein.
  • Rinse with potable water, to remove alkaline residue.
  • Disinfection / sanitation (final stage): Quimiconsult's disinfectant solution is the peracetic acid-based Anticel line (Anticel 5% / 15%), a broad-spectrum, no-rinse oxidizing sanitizer for surfaces and process equipment; we also offer Sanidet / Quaternary Ammonium for surfaces and facilities.

For equipment cleaned by CIP recirculation (which DGR Active does not cover because of its high foam), the program uses CLK Premium (chlorinated alkaline) or Alkaflow CIP300 (chlorine-free alkaline), and a low-foam acid such as Lactac LF in the acid cycle.

DGR Active material compatibility

Because of its medium alkalinity (pH 11 – 12), DGR Active is considerably less aggressive toward materials than a detergent with a pH above 13. It is compatible with stainless steel and with the food-grade plastics (polypropylene, polyethylene) and standard elastomers (EPDM, silicone) used in the food industry. Prolonged contact with aluminum, zinc or coatings with low chemical resistance is not recommended, since the alkaline pH can attack them at high concentrations or with extended contact times. For non-standard materials or coatings, it is advisable to validate compatibility with a preliminary test and with Quimiconsult's technical team.

DGR Active safety, handling and storage

DGR Active is an alkaline product (pH 11.0 to 12.0 in a 1.0% solution, and higher as a concentrate) that must be handled following the recommendations of its current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Prolonged contact with skin or eyes may cause irritation because of its alkaline nature. Wearing nitrile gloves and eye protection is recommended when handling the concentrate in volume.

Reactivity — do not mix with acids: DGR Active reacts with acidic products; sudden neutralization can release heat. It must never be mixed with or come into direct contact with acid detergents (such as Lactac); a complete rinse must always be performed between an alkaline cycle and an acid cycle. Keep away from concentrated acids and heat sources.

First aid (general guidance): skin contact, wash with plenty of water (and soap) for several minutes; eye contact, rinse with running water for about 15 minutes and seek medical attention; ingestion, rinse the mouth, do not induce vomiting and contact a doctor; mist inhalation, move to fresh air.

Storage: keep in its original closed container, in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from concentrated acids and heat sources. Classified and labeled according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS); the full classification, H statements and precautionary statements must be taken from the current SDS. Dispose of leftover product and containers in accordance with applicable environmental legislation.

DGR Active compared with other industrial cleaning detergents

DGR Active (medium alkaline, chlorine-free, foam/surfaces) vs. Alkaplus (stronger self-foaming alkaline, chlorine-free): both are chlorine-free self-foaming alkaline degreasers for cleaning surfaces and facilities (COP). DGR Active has medium alkalinity, gentler on surfaces and elastomers, for grease and protein on surfaces, equipment and livestock transport; Alkaplus offers higher alkalinity for more severe soil loads. The choice depends on the soil level and the sensitivity of the surfaces.

DGR Active (chlorine-free) vs. chlorinated alkaline detergent (e.g. CLK Premium): DGR Active cleans through alkalinity and surfactants, without chlorine, avoiding corrosive hypochlorite residue and the need to check for it on surfaces; a chlorinated alkaline adds protein oxidation and bleaching, at the cost of corrosion risk and more demanding handling. In addition, CLK Premium is low-foaming for CIP, while DGR Active is high-foaming for surfaces. They are products for different methods.

DGR Active (alkaline, degreaser) vs. Lactac (acid, descaler): DGR Active removes grease and protein (organic matter); Lactac removes mineral scale (limescale, milkstone). They are complementary functions within the cleaning program, and must never be mixed (an alkali and an acid neutralize each other).

DGR Active vs. imported degreasers: DGR Active guarantees specified alkalinity and density, hard water compatibility, Kosher certification, in-house manufacturing with batch-to-batch control, direct technical support and nationwide availability, without the logistical dependence of an imported product.

Frequently asked questions about DGR Active

What is DGR Active and what is it used for?

DGR Active (or simply DGR) is a self-foaming, chlorine-free, medium-alkalinity alkaline degreasing detergent (pH 11 – 12; alkalinity 2 – 5%) manufactured by Quimiconsult to remove grease and protein from production equipment, work tables, utensils, molds, facility surfaces, cages, livestock transport and tanks in the meat, dairy and general food industries.

What is an alkaline degreaser used for?

An alkaline degreaser removes greases and oils through saponification (the alkaline base converts fat into water-soluble compounds) and through emulsification with surfactants. It is the main tool for removing greasy residues from equipment, surfaces, floors, walls, cages and transport in the food industry. DGR Active is a medium-alkalinity alkaline degreaser, effective on grease and at the same time gentler on surfaces than a strong alkali.

How is DGR Active different from a chlorinated alkaline detergent?

DGR Active contains no chlorine: it cleans through alkalinity and surfactants, without corrosive hypochlorite residue and without the need to check for chlorine residues before resuming production. A chlorinated alkaline adds protein oxidation and bleaching, useful on very protein-rich soils (e.g. dairy CIP with CLK Premium), but with a higher risk of corrosion and more demanding handling. When disinfection is required, DGR Active is complemented with a subsequent sanitizer (Anticel line).

Can DGR Active be used for CIP cleaning?

No. Because of its high foam formation, DGR Active is designed for cleaning surfaces and facilities (foaming, spraying, immersion, scrubbing), not for closed-loop CIP recirculation. For CIP, low-foam detergents such as CLK Premium (chlorinated) or Alkaflow CIP300 (chlorine-free) are used.

Does it work in very hard water?

Yes. DGR Active's activity is not reduced in the presence of hard water, which prevents the loss of effectiveness caused by the detergent being consumed by water hardness —a relevant advantage in areas with hard tap water, such as northern Mexico.

At what concentration is it used?

2 to 5% in water, depending on the area and grease load. The recommended application is by foamer; it can also be applied by spraying, immersion or manual scrubbing, and it rinses off easily with water at room temperature.

Is it compatible with stainless steel, EPDM and food-grade plastics?

Yes. Its medium alkalinity is compatible with stainless steel, EPDM, silicone, and food-grade polypropylene and polyethylene, with less aggressiveness than an alkaline with a pH above 13. Prolonged contact with aluminum or zinc is not recommended. For non-standard materials, consult our technical team.

What certification does DGR Active have?

DGR Active is Kosher certified and is manufactured by Quimiconsult in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León.
