Clorsan DS Description — Stabilized Sodium Hypochlorite (Longer-Lasting Liquid Chlorine)
At Quimiconsult we manufacture Clorsan DS, a stabilized sodium hypochlorite solution formulated to keep its available chlorine for much longer than conventional sodium hypochlorite. Clorsan DS meets all the characteristics of standard sodium hypochlorite —also known as chlorine, liquid chlorine, bleach or lye in Mexico—, with the same disinfecting, bleaching and deodorizing power, but with one decisive difference: a stabilizing system that slows the natural loss of chlorine over time, so the product reaches the point of use at the concentration you need.
Sodium hypochlorite is an extraordinarily useful product, but it has a well-known weakness: it loses available chlorine with time, heat, light and trace metals, which reduces its effectiveness and forces users to overdose or buy more often. Clorsan DS solves exactly that problem. In a 30-day comparative study carried out by Quimiconsult, starting from the same initial available chlorine concentration, Clorsan DS kept its chlorine practically unchanged for the first ~20 days and retained about 95% at 30 days, while standard hypochlorite (control) retained around 80% over the same period. In other words, Clorsan DS lost roughly 4 times less available chlorine than an unstabilized hypochlorite.
As a direct manufacturer based in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, we offer Clorsan DS with nationwide coverage, technical data sheet (TDS), safety data sheet (SDS) and technical support. For anyone looking for sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, liquid chlorine, bleach or lye with greater stability, shelf life and dosing consistency, Clorsan DS is Quimiconsult's technical answer.
What is Clorsan DS and why "stabilized"?
Clorsan DS is sodium hypochlorite (the same molecule, formula NaOCl, at the typical concentration of commercial hypochlorite and an alkaline pH of 11 – 13) to which Quimiconsult adds a stabilizing system. It is not a different product from sodium hypochlorite: it is sodium hypochlorite with improved stability, meeting the characteristics, disinfecting power and uses of standard hypochlorite.
The difference lies in preserving the available chlorine. All sodium hypochlorite decomposes over time —the active chlorine is lost and the solution weakens—, and that decomposition is accelerated by heat, light and, above all, by trace metals (copper, nickel, iron, cobalt) that act as catalysts. Clorsan DS includes a sequestering system (of the polyphosphate-based stabilizer type) that complexes those trace metals and, together with alkaline pH control, slows the decomposition reaction. The result is a hypochlorite that holds its chlorine concentration for longer, in storage and in distribution.
The stability study: Clorsan DS vs. standard hypochlorite (30 days)
Quimiconsult ran a 30-day comparative stability test between a standard (control) sodium hypochlorite solution and Clorsan DS, both starting from the same initial available chlorine concentration, measuring chlorine retention over time. Retention (the percentage of the initial available chlorine that is kept) was:
Day 1:
Standard hypochlorite (control): 100%
Clorsan DS (stabilized): 100%
Day 15:
Standard hypochlorite (control): ~97%
Clorsan DS (stabilized): ~99%
Day 20:
Standard hypochlorite (control): ~96%
Clorsan DS (stabilized): ~99%
Day 30:
Standard hypochlorite (control): ~80%
Clorsan DS (stabilized): ~95%
The conclusions are clear:
- Clorsan DS stays practically stable for ~20 days (retention close to 99%), while standard hypochlorite has already begun to decline.
- At 30 days, Clorsan DS keeps ~95% of its available chlorine, versus ~80% for the standard —which also drops sharply after day 20.
- In terms of total loss at 30 days, Clorsan DS lost about 4 times less chlorine than the unstabilized hypochlorite.
For the user, this means more consistent dosing, less overdosing to make up for the loss, longer inventory life and less product waste —an especially valuable advantage in hot climates, in long distribution chains and when consumption is not immediate.

Advantages of a stabilized sodium hypochlorite
- Available chlorine that stays stable over time: the active ingredient lasts more days, for reliable disinfection and bleaching.
- Consistent dosing: since the concentration doesn't drop as fast, the dose stays predictable and overdosing is avoided.
- Longer inventory life: less product lost to decomposition in storage, useful when consumption is not immediate.
- Better performance in hot climates and long distribution: heat and transit time affect the concentration less.
- Less waste and better cost-effectiveness: you get more chlorine out of every liter you buy.
- Same use as standard hypochlorite: the same methods, reference doses and applications, with better preservation.
Clorsan DS applications
Clorsan DS serves the same applications as sodium hypochlorite, with the advantage of its stability. The dose and regulatory compliance must be validated in each case.
Water treatment and disinfection
Disinfection of drinking water, wells, cisterns, tanks and distribution networks, and disinfection of process water. Its stable available chlorine helps maintain reliable residual chlorine dosing. (For water for human use and consumption, verify the dose and compliance with the applicable regulations, e.g. NOM-127-SSA1.)
Wastewater treatment
Effluent disinfection and microbiological control, odor control and oxidation of contaminants in wastewater treatment plants.
Disinfection and sanitation in the food and beverage industry
Disinfection of surfaces, equipment and facilities, and disinfection of process water, as a chlorinated agent in sanitation programs. (For food contact, verify grade, dose, rinsing and applicable regulations.)
Livestock, poultry and agricultural industry
Disinfection of facilities, equipment, drinkers and livestock and poultry production areas, and disinfection of water in these operations.
Post-harvest and fruit and vegetable wash water
Disinfection of wash water and post-harvest process lines, where consistent available chlorine is key to uniform treatment.
Textile, paper and pulp bleaching
Bleaching of fibers, textiles, paper and pulp, where stable available chlorine brings consistency to the process.
Institutional cleaning and disinfection
Disinfection of surfaces, floors and areas in institutional, commercial and service settings; odor control and general sanitation.
Cooling towers and water systems
Control of biofilm, algae and microbiological load in cooling towers and recirculating water systems.
Swimming pools and recreational water treatment
Water disinfection in swimming pools and recreational systems, with the advantage of a chlorine concentration that stays more stable over time.
Directions for use and dosing
Clorsan DS is dosed just like sodium hypochlorite, according to the application, the organic/microbiological load and the target residual chlorine. Thanks to its greater stability, the product's concentration stays closer to nominal over time, which makes dose calculation easier. We recommend checking the available chlorine before dosing in critical applications, preparing dilutions with good-quality water and validating the dose and regulatory compliance of each application (drinking water, food, etc.). Quimiconsult's technical team helps define the dosing protocol.
Safety, handling and storage
Clorsan DS is sodium hypochlorite, a corrosive and oxidizing product classified as DANGER under the GHS; it must be handled following its current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Its hazard statements include: may be corrosive to metals (H290), harmful if swallowed (H302), causes severe skin burns and eye damage (H314/H318), harmful if inhaled (H332) and very toxic to aquatic life (H400).
Critical incompatibility — do not mix with acids: sodium hypochlorite reacts with acids, releasing toxic chlorine gas. It must never be mixed with acidic products (descalers, acid sanitizers, acid cleaners), nor with ammonia or products containing it, nor with reducing agents or nitrogen compounds. Keep away from acids, reducing agents, nitrogen compounds and metals such as copper, nickel and cobalt (which also catalyze its decomposition).
Personal protection: wear safety glasses (and a face shield for severe exposure), chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing and footwear; avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, and inhalation of mists or vapors. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention; if swallowed, do not induce vomiting and seek medical attention.
Storage: keep in a cool, dry, ventilated area protected from direct sunlight and heat (heat and light accelerate chlorine loss), in the original closed, corrosion-resistant container, away from incompatible materials. The Clorsan DS stabilizing system extends chlorine preservation compared with standard hypochlorite, but good storage practices (a cool, dark place, inventory rotation) are still recommended. The full GHS classification, H and P statements and first aid must be taken from the current SDS. Dispose of the product and containers in accordance with applicable environmental legislation; do not discharge into bodies of water or drains.
Clorsan DS compared with other options
Clorsan DS (stabilized hypochlorite) vs. standard sodium hypochlorite: same molecule, same disinfecting and bleaching power, but Clorsan DS keeps its available chlorine much longer (it retained ~95% at 30 days vs ~80% for the standard in the comparative test), with the advantages of consistent dosing, inventory life and less waste.
Clorsan DS (chlorine) vs. peracetic acid sanitizers (Anticel): hypochlorite is a widely used, cost-efficient chlorinated disinfectant and bleach; peracetic acid (the Anticel line) is a chlorine-free, residue-free, no-rinse oxidizing sanitizer for surfaces and process equipment. They are chosen according to the application, the type of residue and the process requirements; hypochlorite and an acidic product must never be mixed (it releases chlorine gas).
Clorsan DS vs. imported or unstabilized bulk hypochlorite: Clorsan DS offers the stability of a formulation with a sequestering system, domestic manufacturing with a CoA per batch, technical support and availability, without the concentration loss that standard hypochlorite suffers in storage and transport.
Frequently asked questions about Clorsan DS
What is Clorsan DS? It is Quimiconsult's stabilized sodium hypochlorite solution: sodium hypochlorite (chlorine / liquid chlorine / bleach / lye) with a stabilizing system that keeps its available chlorine for longer. It meets the characteristics and uses of standard sodium hypochlorite.
How does it differ from regular sodium hypochlorite? In chlorine stability. In a 30-day comparative test starting from the same initial concentration, Clorsan DS stayed practically stable for ~20 days and kept ~95% of its chlorine at 30 days, versus ~80% for standard hypochlorite —that is, it lost about 4 times less chlorine.
How is hypochlorite stabilized? Hypochlorite decomposes mainly because of trace metals (copper, nickel, iron, cobalt) that catalyze the reaction, as well as heat and light. Clorsan DS includes a sequestering system that complexes those trace metals and, with alkaline pH control, slows the decomposition.
Does it have the same disinfecting power as standard hypochlorite? Yes. It is sodium hypochlorite with the same disinfecting, bleaching and deodorizing properties; the improvement is that it keeps its available chlorine for longer, for more consistent effectiveness.
Can it be mixed with other cleaning products? Not with acidic products or ammonia: mixing hypochlorite with an acid releases toxic chlorine gas, and with ammonia it forms dangerous chloramines. Always handle it separately.
What applications is it for? Water treatment and disinfection (drinking water, wells, cisterns, networks), wastewater, disinfection in the food and beverage industry, livestock and poultry, post-harvest, textile/paper bleaching, institutional cleaning, cooling towers and swimming pools, among others.
