Silad X100 Description — 100% Active Self-Dispersing Concentrated Defoamer for Oil-Based, Non-Aqueous and Mixed Systems

At Quimiconsult we manufacture Silad X100, a concentrated industrial defoamer with 100% active ingredient based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS / dimethicone, CAS 63148-62-9), formulated with self-dispersing technology to successfully suppress or prevent foam in a wide variety of oil-based, non-aqueous, mixed (oil-water) and aqueous systems. Unlike aqueous emulsion defoamers, which require an aqueous phase to disperse, and pure silicone oils, which are difficult to distribute evenly without treatment, Silad X100 disperses effectively in both non-aqueous systems and systems containing water, which significantly broadens its range of application compared with conventional PDMS formats. Extremely stable and easy to handle, it is recommended for applications that require excellent durability in alkaline systems, with superior performance in neutral or acidic conditions as well. As direct manufacturers with our own R&D laboratory and more than 30 years of experience in specialty chemicals, we guarantee batch-to-batch consistency, with availability from our plant in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and shipping throughout Mexico.

Foam is one of the most costly and underestimated operational problems in industry: it reduces the usable capacity of tanks, reactors, columns and evaporators; causes overflows, losses and shutdowns; interferes with pumps, sensors and control systems; causes cavitation in fluid pumps; and compromises the quality and stability of formulation, cleaning, separation and refining processes. Silad X100 controls foam through the characteristic mechanism of silicone defoamers —PDMS droplets, which have low surface tension and are insoluble in the foaming medium, enter the bubble walls, destabilize the film that holds them together and cause them to burst (defoaming action) and prevent them from forming (antifoam action)— but with the decisive advantage of its self-dispersing formulation, which overcomes the limitation of pure silicone oils and conventional aqueous emulsions. With 100% active content, its effective dose is very low, making it one of the most efficient defoamers per unit dose in the Silad line.

For those looking for how to eliminate foam in an oil-based or non-aqueous system, a 100% active concentrated defoamer, a defoamer for oil-based systems, a self-dispersing defoamer, a PDMS defoamer for chemical and petroleum processes, a defoamer for printing inks, polyurethanes or resins, a concentrated defoamer for alkaline cleaners and heavy-duty detergents or a high-efficiency defoaming silicone oil, Silad X100 is the technical answer from the Quimiconsult catalog, backed by in-house manufacturing, complete regulatory documentation and advice on dosing and evaluating the product in each process.

PDMS, dimethicone, E900, silicone fluid: all describe the same active

The active ingredient of Silad X100 is polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), identified in different contexts by different names, all referring to the same linear silicone polymer (CAS 63148-62-9):

  • PDMS: industrial technical abbreviation (polydimethylsiloxane).
  • Dimethicone: INCI and pharmaceutical name, used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and ingredient labeling.
  • Dimethylpolysiloxane: chemical name (dimetilpolisiloxano in Spanish).
  • E900: European Union additive code for dimethylpolysiloxane used as an antifoaming agent; frequently referenced in process specifications in the food and beverage industry (referring to the PDMS active; see the grade note below).
  • Silicone oil / silicone fluid: general industrial terms for PDMS in liquid form, widely used in the chemical, petrochemical and lubricant industries.
  • Silicone defoamer: functional description of the compound in its application as a foam suppressor.

The term "concentrated defoamer for oil", by which Silad X100 is also known, refers to its applicability in oil-based systems (mineral, synthetic or vegetable), which sets it apart from PDMS-in-water emulsions that require aqueous compatibility to disperse. Grade note: although the PDMS/E900 active is recognized as an additive in various regulatory frameworks, Silad X100 is an industrial grade defoamer; for applications involving food contact, the food grade versions of the family (Silad 210 FG or Silad Powder FG, manufactured in an SQF plant) must be used, and eligibility for each regulated application must be verified with our technical team.

The self-dispersing formulation: why Silad X100 works where other PDMS products cannot

PDMS in its pure form (untreated silicone fluid) has very low surface tension and is inherently immiscible with water. This makes it an excellent defoamer once it reaches the bubble interface, but makes it difficult to disperse evenly during addition: without uniform distribution, PDMS tends to concentrate at specific points in the system, reducing its effectiveness and potentially creating silicone spots in the finished product.

The self-dispersing formulation of Silad X100 solves this problem: it allows the active to distribute evenly throughout the system at the moment of addition, without requiring high-shear equipment or prior pre-emulsification, and it can be diluted with both water and cosolvent. This property is the reason Silad X100 can be used effectively in:

  • Oil-based systems: mineral oils, synthetic oils (PAO, esters), vegetable oils and oil-water mixtures, where aqueous PDMS emulsions cannot be used.
  • Aqueous systems with a high organic load or extreme conditions: where the PDMS emulsion can break down due to the presence of surfactants, acids or alkalis that destabilize the dispersed phase of conventional emulsions.
  • Low-volume direct injection processes: where dosing the undiluted concentrate (for example, 10 to 20 ppm in wastewater and chemical processes) simplifies the injection system and reduces the handling of dilution volumes.
  • Formulations with organic solvents and mixed systems: where simultaneous compatibility with the organic phase and the process water is required.

It can be used at full strength as received, dispersed in a solvent or process liquid, or in blends, depending on the needs of the system. For maximum effectiveness, the defoamer should be added in advance, before foam begins to form.

Silad X100 within the silicone defoamer family

Quimiconsult's Silad line offers PDMS in different concentration and compatibility formats to cover the full spectrum of process systems:

  • Silad X100 (100% active, self-dispersing, pH 5.0 – 7.0) — the product described on this page: a 100% active PDMS concentrate with self-dispersing technology and medium viscosity (2,000 – 6,000 cP), for oil-based, mixed oil-water, non-aqueous and aqueous systems, or any application where self-dispersibility without pre-emulsification is a requirement.
  • Silad X700 (concentrate for non-aqueous systems) — high-concentration silicone defoamer for purely non-aqueous systems, aimed at formulators who need nearly pure PDMS to prepare their own defoamer formulations.
  • Silad B300 (silicone emulsion, 20% active, pH 3.5 – 5.0) — low-viscosity silicone defoamer emulsion (1,000 – 2,500 cP), for neutral to acidic aqueous systems with nonionic surfactants.
  • Silad B600 (silicone emulsion, 20% active, pH 5.0 – 8.0) — very low-viscosity silicone defoamer emulsion (100 – 250 cP), for aqueous systems with anionic surfactants or neutral to slightly alkaline pH; ideal for automatic dosing.
  • Silad B700 (silicone, 100% active) — concentrated silicone defoamer for water treatment, alkaline cleaners, CIP and emulsion formulation.
  • Silad 210 and Silad 210 FG (silicone emulsion, 10% active) — emulsion foam controllers; the 210 FG version is food grade and kosher, manufactured in an SQF plant.
  • Silad Powder FG (silicone powder, food grade) — food grade powder defoamer for dry blends and food processes.
  • Silad AF100 (organic base, silicone-free) — concentrated organic defoamer for silicone-sensitive processes and products.

Silad X100: when is it the right choice?

The rule for choosing Silad X100 over the alternatives in the family is clear: when your system is oil-based or contains oil as a major component, when it is non-aqueous or mixed, or when you need to dose a 100% active concentrate that self-disperses at the injection point, Silad X100 is the right choice. For purely aqueous systems without oil, the 20% emulsions (Silad B300 or B600) are easier to dose at a lower cost per unit of active. If you need nearly pure PDMS to formulate your own defoamer products for non-aqueous systems, consider Silad X700. If the process does not tolerate silicone, the option is Silad AF100 (organic base, silicone-free). If in doubt, our technical team can guide you and support the laboratory evaluation.

It is worth noting that, although the cost per kilogram of X100 is higher than that of the 20% emulsions, its effective dose is substantially lower (100% active versus 20%), so the cost per application can be equivalent or lower, in addition to the advantage of its self-dispersibility and its compatibility with systems where emulsions do not work.

Key features and benefits of Silad X100

Industries and application systems for Silad X100

Suitability and dosage for each case must be validated under the customer's specific conditions; our technical team can support the testing.

Alkaline cleaners and heavy-duty detergents

High-concentration alkaline cleaners formulated with anionic surfactants are among the most challenging systems for defoamers: high alkalinity and the presence of active surfactants generate intense foam and can destabilize conventional PDMS emulsions. Thanks to its self-dispersing formulation, Silad X100 remains evenly dispersed under these conditions when dosed directly during the cleaner's manufacturing phase, and it is suitable both for process foam control and for incorporation into the cleaning product formulation.

Water and wastewater treatment systems

In water treatment plants with a high surfactant load, in dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems and in sludge dewatering processes, foam interferes with separation efficiency and can cause overflows. Silad X100 is dosed into these systems at very low levels (initial evaluation of 10 to 20 ppm of the product as received, undiluted), which simplifies the injection system and reduces the handling of dilution volumes. Its compatibility with alkaline, neutral and acidic systems covers the pH range of most industrial effluents.

Agrochemical formulations

In the manufacture of agrochemical formulations (suspension concentrates SC, emulsifiable concentrates EC, water-dispersible granules WG and solutions), process systems often combine aqueous and organic phases in which conventional aqueous defoamers do not disperse properly. Because it self-disperses in both phases, Silad X100 acts effectively in these mixed systems, both as a process defoamer and incorporated into the final crop protection formulation.

Chemical and petroleum processing / petrochemicals

Silad X100 is used as a process defoamer in the chemical and petrochemical industry, in refining and processing, and in operations that combine aqueous and organic phases: reactors, extraction, chemical separations and distillations. Its self-dispersibility and its compatibility with alkaline, neutral and acidic systems make it suitable for demanding process streams where aqueous emulsions do not disperse properly.

Mineral or synthetic oil systems: cutting fluids and lubricants

In metalworking fluid (MWF) systems, emulsifiable oils and water- or oil-based lubricants, the foam generated as the fluid circulates reduces its lubricating effectiveness and causes cavitation in pumps. Silad X100 is the right choice for these systems because its self-dispersing formulation allows even distribution in the oil phase, where it acts at the oil-water interface to suppress foam formation.

Printing inks, polyurethanes and resins

Thanks to its performance in non-aqueous systems, Silad X100 is suitable for preventing foam in printing inks (including solvent-based and non-aqueous inks), in polyurethane manufacturing, and in the handling and manufacture of resins, where agitation and air entrainment generate foam and bubbles that affect process quality and efficiency. Because it can be used at full strength, dispersed in solvent or in blends, it adapts to the needs of each formulation.

Specialty chemicals and other process applications

Silad X100 is also used in specialty chemical formulations and can be evaluated in other oil-based, non-aqueous or mixed industrial processes where foam is an operational problem. Validation under the customer's specific conditions is always recommended.

Use concentrations and dosing method for Silad X100

Application method: Silad X100 can be used as received (direct dosing) or pre-diluted with water, PPG, PEG or the cosolvent/process liquid. To prepare the dilution, mix 1 part defoamer with 3 to 10 parts diluent, stirring gently until a uniform mixture is obtained. For long-term bulk stability of dilutions below 4% active, care must be taken with the dilution formulation. For maximum effectiveness, dose in advance, before foam begins to form.

Suggested initial evaluation doses (technical data sheet):

  • General initial evaluation: 200 to 500 ppm of the product as received on the foaming system.
  • Wastewater and chemical processing operations: 10 to 20 ppm of the product as received, undiluted.
  • Adjustment: adjust use levels according to observed performance, starting at the low end of the range.

Guidance by system type (to be validated in the laboratory):

  • Cleaner and detergent formulations: around 0.05 to 0.3% by weight of the formulation, added during manufacturing under moderate stirring.
  • Agrochemical formulations: around 0.01 to 0.1% by weight of the formulation, added to the phase with the highest foam generation.
  • Cutting fluids and emulsifiable lubricants: around 0.01 to 0.05% by volume of the working fluid; a 1:5 to 1:10 predilution in water or the system solvent makes distribution easier in automatic injection systems.
  • Chemical and petrochemical processes: around 0.005 to 0.05% depending on the foaming load of the system, added directly to the process stream.

These system ranges are for guidance and must be confirmed through laboratory testing under actual process conditions.

Effect of temperature: in high-temperature systems (above 60 °C), the viscosity of Silad X100 decreases, which facilitates its spontaneous dispersion. In low-temperature systems (below 15 °C), additional agitation or gentle preheating of the product may be required to reduce viscosity before dosing.

Compatibilities and considerations

Silad X100 is compatible with oil-based systems (mineral, synthetic, vegetable), non-aqueous systems, mixed oil-water systems and aqueous systems, with nonionic and anionic surfactants, and with a wide pH range (alkaline, neutral and acidic). Its self-dispersing nature gives it a wider handling window than very high-viscosity concentrates, without the compatibility restrictions of aqueous emulsions.

It requires precautions or specific verification with: freeze-thaw cycles (self-dispersing PDMS can lose its dispersion properties after freezing); extreme temperatures during prolonged storage; concentrated strong acids and alkalis; and very intense, prolonged shear. As with any defoamer, a compatibility and performance test under actual system conditions is recommended before full-scale implementation. In coatings and systems sensitive to silicone-related surface defects, evaluate the dosage level or consider the silicone-free alternative (Silad AF100).

Packaging, storage and shelf life

Packaging: Silad X100 is available in 20 kg and 50 kg jerrycans, 200 kg drums and 1,000 kg containers (IBC/tote), with bilingual (ES-EN) documentation for each presentation. Samples are also available for technical evaluation in process.

Storage: to ensure product quality, the container must be tightly closed when not in use. Store at controlled room temperature (ideally between 5 and 40 °C), in a dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or freezing, which can cause the product to separate. After prolonged standing, slight sedimentation may occur; stir before use to restore the homogeneity of the self-dispersing formulation. Avoid freezing: self-dispersing PDMS can lose its dispersion properties after freeze-thaw cycles. If separation occurs, thaw if frozen, stir the contents and use as normal.

Shelf life: the official expiration date and shelf life conditions are indicated on the original container and on the Certificate of Analysis (COA) of the corresponding batch.

Safety, handling and regulatory considerations

Silad X100 should be handled following the recommendations in its current Safety Data Sheet (HDS/SDS). As general good industrial handling practice, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended: chemical safety goggles, industrial gloves (nitrile or equivalent), appropriate work clothing and work in adequately ventilated areas. In case of eye contact, rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes. Wash hands and arms after handling the product.

Spill management: defoamer spills are slippery and pose a fall risk. Contain with inert absorbents (vermiculite, sand, absorbent pads), collect and dispose of in accordance with current waste legislation, and wash the area with water and detergent to remove residues.

GHS classification, hazard statements (H statements) and precautionary statements: this section is only a general handling guide. The full classification under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), hazard statements, precautionary statements, first aid and labeling in accordance with NOM-018-STPS-2015 must be taken from the product's current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which is delivered with every supply. Always consult the updated SDS before use.

Frequently asked questions about Silad X100

What is Silad X100 and what is it used for?

Silad X100 is a concentrated defoamer with 100% active ingredient based on PDMS (dimethicone), with a self-dispersing formulation, manufactured by Quimiconsult. It suppresses and prevents foam in oil-based, non-aqueous, mixed and aqueous systems: alkaline cleaners and heavy-duty detergents, water and wastewater treatment, agrochemical formulations, chemical and petroleum processing, cutting fluids and lubricants, printing inks, polyurethanes, resins and specialty chemicals.

What does it mean that Silad X100 is "self-dispersing," and why does it matter?

It means the product distributes evenly throughout the system without the need for high-shear equipment, pre-emulsification or, in many cases, prior dilution. Untreated pure PDMS is difficult to disperse and tends to concentrate at certain points in the system, leaving areas uncovered; the self-dispersing formulation of X100 allows the active to distribute uniformly at the moment of addition, achieving the even coverage that ensures sustained defoaming effectiveness.

How does Silad X100 differ from a 20% PDMS emulsion (B300 / B600)?

Use a 20% emulsion (Silad B300 or B600) when your system is purely aqueous and the defoamer can be incorporated in emulsion form without compatibility issues. Use Silad X100 when your system contains oil, is non-aqueous or mixed, when you need a 100% active concentrate with greater efficiency per kilogram, or when conventional emulsions are destabilized in your process by active surfactants, extreme temperatures or pH outside their stability range. The cost per kilogram of X100 is higher, but its effective dose is much lower.

How does Silad X100 differ from Silad X700?

Both are high-concentration PDMS defoamers for non-aqueous or mixed systems. Silad X100 is 100% active with a self-dispersing formulation, designed for direct dosing or minimal dilution and self-dispersion at the injection point. Silad X700 is a concentrate aimed at formulators who need nearly pure PDMS to prepare their own defoamer formulations for non-aqueous systems. In practice, X100 is the option for direct use in the process; X700 is for formulating specific defoamer products.

What pH range does Silad X100 work in?

Silad X100 offers robust stability and high durability over a wide pH range, with excellent performance in alkaline systems and superior performance in neutral and acidic conditions as well.

How is Silad X100 dosed?

For a general initial evaluation, 200 to 500 ppm of the product as received is recommended; for wastewater and chemical processing, 10 to 20 ppm undiluted. For incorporation into formulations (cleaners, agrochemicals, fluids), doses are higher and specific to each system, and must be determined through laboratory testing.

Can it be used diluted?

Yes. It can be used as received or diluted in water, PPG, PEG or the cosolvent/process liquid (1 part defoamer in 3 to 10 parts diluent). For dilutions below 4% active, care must be taken with the long-term stability of the dilution.

Is Silad X100 food grade?

Silad X100 is an industrial grade silicone defoamer. Although the PDMS active (E900) is recognized as an additive in various regulatory frameworks, the eligibility of Silad X100 for food contact use depends on the application, use concentrations and applicable regulations. For food applications, use the food grade versions of the family (Silad 210 FG or Silad Powder FG) or consult our technical team.

What happens if Silad X100 separates or settles during storage?

After prolonged standing, slight sedimentation may occur; stir before use to restore homogeneity. Avoid freezing, as it can affect the dispersion properties. If separation occurs due to extreme temperatures, thaw if frozen, stir and use as normal.

Is it safe to handle?

It should be handled with the recommended PPE (nitrile gloves, chemical safety goggles and suitable clothing) and good ventilation. The full GHS classification, hazard statements and first aid measures must be taken from the product's current SDS.

What presentations is it sold in, and where can I buy Silad X100 in Mexico?
