Silad B300 — Low-Viscosity Silicone Antifoam Emulsion for Industrial Applications
At Quimiconsult we manufacture Silad B300, a low-viscosity, general-purpose, highly cost-effective silicone (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) antifoam emulsion designed to successfully suppress and prevent foam formation in a wide variety of industrial processes. Silad B300 is a very stable, easy-to-handle antifoam that excels in applications with nonionic and anionic surfactants that demand excellent durability, delivering superior performance under neutral, mildly alkaline or acidic conditions. It is an active-rich emulsion (20% active ingredient content by weight) that, thanks to its relatively low viscosity, is very easy to dose and meter and integrates simply into aqueous systems. As a direct manufacturer with our own R&D laboratory and more than 30 years of experience in specialty chemicals, we guarantee lot-to-lot consistency, with availability from our plant in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and shipping throughout Mexico.
Foam is one of the costliest and most underestimated operational problems in industry: it reduces the usable capacity of tanks, reactors, columns and evaporators; causes overflows, losses and shutdowns; interferes with pumps, sensors and control systems; lowers oxygen transfer and gas-liquid contact efficiency; and compromises the quality and stability of cleaning, formulation and separation processes. Silad B300 controls foam through the characteristic mechanism of silicone antifoams: the PDMS droplets, which have low surface tension and are insoluble in the foaming medium, enter the bubble walls, destabilize the film that holds them together and cause them to rupture, eliminating existing foam (defoaming action) and preventing its formation (antifoam action). Its very low effective dose, excellent durability and easy dosing make it a cost-effective, reliable foam control option for multiple sectors.
For anyone looking for how to eliminate foam in an industrial process, a low-viscosity silicone antifoam emulsion, an antifoam for metalworking fluids (MWF), an antifoam for gas sweetening and glycol dehydration, an antifoam for amine scrubbing, an antifoam for alkaline cleaners and heavy-duty detergents, a PDMS defoamer for water treatment or a cost-effective general-purpose silicone antifoam, Silad B300 is the technical answer in the Quimiconsult catalog, backed by in-house manufacturing, complete regulatory documentation and advice on dosing and evaluating the product in each process.
Dimethicone, PDMS and dimethylpolysiloxane: are they the same?
Yes. The terms dimethicone, PDMS, dimethylpolysiloxane and polydimethylsiloxane all designate the same linear-chain silicone polymer (CAS 63148-62-9). The difference is purely one of nomenclature depending on context: dimethicone is the INCI name used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals; PDMS is the technical abbreviation (polydimethylsiloxane); dimethylpolysiloxane is the chemical name; and Silad B300 is the trade name of the 20% emulsion developed and produced by Quimiconsult. Whatever term your process or formulation uses to identify the ingredient, Silad B300 is the source of that active in a ready-to-use aqueous emulsion, with a dimethicone (PDMS) content of 20% by weight. It is an industrial grade product intended as a process antifoam; for dimethicone uses with cosmetic or pharmaceutical finished-product requirements, check the appropriate grade and documentation with our technical team.
Silad B300 within the silicone antifoam family
Silad B300 belongs to the category of silicone (PDMS) emulsion antifoams emulsified in water with a nonionic emulsifier, one of the most established and effective technologies for foam control in industrial aqueous systems. Compared with organic antifoams based on vegetable oils, fatty acids or esters, silicone antifoams offer decisive advantages for industrial processes: greater potency per unit of mass, longer-lasting antifoam action over time, thermal stability appropriate for conventional processes, and broad compatibility with the surfactants used in formulations and industrial cleaning.
Within this category, Silad B300 stands out as a low-viscosity, general-purpose emulsion with 20% active content, a balance designed to deliver cost-effective, reliable foam control with maximum ease of handling: its relatively low viscosity (1,000 – 2,500 cP) allows it to be pumped, metered and dosed accurately with standard equipment, and its nonionic emulsifier ensures compatibility with nonionic and anionic surfactant systems. It is the Silad family option for anyone looking for a versatile silicone antifoam with a broad range of applications and an excellent cost-benefit ratio.
The Silad family at Quimiconsult — silicone, organic-based and powder antifoams
Quimiconsult offers the Silad family of antifoams, covering the main foam control technologies, concentrations and formats so that each plant can select the optimal product for its system, working viscosity and regulatory grade:
- Silad B300 (silicone emulsion, 20% active, low viscosity) — the product described on this page: a general-purpose, cost-effective, easy-to-dose silicone antifoam emulsion for a wide range of industrial aqueous applications.
- Silad B600 (silicone emulsion, 20% active) — a low-viscosity silicone antifoam emulsion, complementary to B300 within the 20% emulsion range.
- Silad B700 (silicone, 100% active) — a concentrated 100% active silicone (PDMS) antifoam for wastewater treatment, alkaline cleaners, industrial CIP, recirculation systems and formulating silicone emulsions.
- Silad 210 and Silad 210 FG (silicone emulsion, 10% active) — silicone emulsion foam controllers for aqueous systems; the 210 FG version is food grade, kosher, and made in an SQF plant.
- Silad Powder FG (silicone powder, food grade) — a food grade powdered antifoam for dry blends and food processes.
- Silad AF100 (organic-based, silicone-free) — a concentrated organic antifoam for applications where the absence of silicone is required or preferred (paints, inks, adhesives, silicone-sensitive processes).
- Silad X100 and Silad X700 (for non-aqueous / oil systems) — concentrated antifoams for non-aqueous systems and oil applications.
Practical selection criteria: Silad B300 is an excellent general-purpose choice when you need a low-viscosity, cost-effective, easy-to-dose silicone emulsion for industrial aqueous systems. If you need a 100% silicone concentrate for maximum potency or to prepare your own dilutions, consider Silad B700. For food-contact applications, use the food grade versions (210 FG, Powder FG). If the process or product does not tolerate silicone, the option is Silad AF100 (organic-based, silicone-free). If in doubt, our technical team can guide you and support laboratory evaluation.
How does Silad B300 work? — Mechanism of action of silicone antifoam
Silicone emulsion antifoams such as Silad B300 work through a highly efficient, durable and selective physical mechanism that ruptures foam films.
When foam forms, the gas bubbles are stabilized by thin liquid films (lamellae) reinforced by the surfactants present. Once dosed and dispersed in the system, the Silad B300 emulsion releases fine droplets of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that migrate to the air-liquid interface of the bubbles, drawn by the low surface tension of silicone (~20-21 mN/m) compared with that of foaming surfactant solutions (~30-40 mN/m). By inserting itself into the lamella, the silicone —incompatible with the foaming surfactants and with a very different surface tension— locally breaks the film that kept the bubble stable. The lamella thins rapidly under capillary forces until it collapses mechanically, releasing the trapped gas.
Because the silicone is not chemically consumed during this process, it remains available to suppress new cascading foam formation for long periods after the initial dose, which explains Silad B300's greater durability and lower dosage compared with organic antifoams. The product's nonionic emulsifier avoids unfavorable interactions with the anionic surfactants common in industrial formulations and cleaners, maintaining effectiveness in the presence of detergents and process surfactants, and the polydimethylsiloxane chain does not undergo significant hydrolysis under the acidic to mildly alkaline pH conditions typical of industrial processes.

Industrial applications of Silad B300
Silad B300 is a versatile, general-purpose silicone antifoam with applications across numerous industrial sectors where foam is an operational problem. Suitability and dosage for each case should be validated under the customer's specific conditions; our technical team can support the trials.
Metalworking fluids (MWF) and coolant lubricants
Silad B300 is used to control foam in metalworking fluids (MWF) —soluble oils and semi-synthetic and synthetic cutting and machining fluids— and in mineral oil-based coolant lubricants. In these systems, recirculation, high-speed pumping and the presence of surfactants and additives generate foam that reduces tank capacity, causes overflows and compromises lubrication and cooling. Foam control with Silad B300 maintains fluid efficiency and operational stability.
Gas treatment: sweetening, glycol dehydration and amine scrubbing
One of Silad B300's most distinctive applications is foam control in natural gas and industrial gas stream treatment processes: gas sweetening, glycol dehydrators and amine scrubbers/absorbers (amine scrubbing). In amine absorption columns (for H₂S and CO₂ removal) and in glycol dehydration systems (TEG/DEG), foam causes solvent carryover, loss of gas-liquid contact efficiency, column flooding and costly shutdowns. Silad B300 controls this foam, keeping operations stable and protecting process and solvent performance.
Pulp and paper processing
In the paper industry, Silad B300 controls foam in pulping processes, process water recirculation systems (white water), bleaching operations, paper machines and effluent treatment, where the presence of fibers, starches, surfactants and additives generates persistent foam that affects efficiency and quality.
Specialty chemical formulations: alkaline cleaners and heavy-duty detergents
Silad B300 is an effective antifoam additive in formulations of industrial alkaline cleaners, heavy-duty detergents and cleaning solutions, where it controls the excess foam generated by surfactants during production and use, aiding rinsing, recirculation and cleaning system performance. Its compatibility with nonionic and anionic systems and its stability in alkaline media make it ideal for this type of formulation.
Industrial water treatment
In industrial water treatment systems, wastewater treatment plants, aeration tanks, recirculation systems and cooling towers, Silad B300 controls the foam generated by surfactants, proteins and organic matter, which lowers oxygen transfer efficiency, causes overflows and hampers operation. For water treatment and chemical processing, the recommended initial evaluation is just 20 to 50 ppm of concentrated product.
Pigments, coatings and adhesives
Silad B300 is used in the production of pigments, coatings and adhesives, where the presence of surfactants and dispersants generates foam during mixing, grinding and packaging. (For coatings and systems sensitive to silicone-related surface defects, also evaluate the silicone-free option Silad AF100.)
Construction, plastics and rubber
In construction chemistry (concrete and mortar additives, grouts, latex-based systems), in plastics production and in the rubber industry (emulsion polymerization, latex compounds), Silad B300 controls foam and entrained air during processing, improving density, quality and operating efficiency.
Other process applications
Given the versatility of silicone antifoams, Silad B300 can be evaluated in industrial fermentation processes (production of enzymes, organic acids and non-food bio-inputs), agrochemical formulations, textile processing (dyeing and finishing baths, washing and bleaching), fertilizer and phosphoric acid production, the sugar industry and its derivatives, and in general any industrial aqueous process where foam is an operational problem. Validation under the customer's specific conditions is always recommended. Note: Silad B300 is an industrial grade antifoam; for applications involving direct or indirect food contact, use the food grade versions of the family (Silad 210 FG or Silad Powder FG).
Use, dosing and incorporation recommendations
Method of application: Silad B300 can be used as a concentrate (direct dosing) or pre-diluted with water (the recommended method for better distribution and cost-effectiveness). To prepare the dilution, mix 1 part antifoam with 3 to 10 parts water, stirring gently until a uniform mixture is obtained. Gentle agitation of the diluted product during intermediate storage is recommended to maintain uniformity.
Suggested initial evaluation doses:
- General initial evaluation: 200 to 500 ppm of concentrated product on the foaming system.
- Water treatment and chemical processing: 20 to 50 ppm of concentrated product.
- Adjustment: adjust the concentration level according to observed performance, starting at the low end of the range and increasing gradually until the desired foam control is achieved, optimizing dosage and cost.
The exact dose depends on the foaming intensity of the process, the type and concentration of surfactants present, temperature, pH and residence time.
Point of addition: to maximize effectiveness and cost-efficiency, the antifoam should be dosed in advance, at a stage before intense foam formation (preventive dosing), rather than added reactively once foam has formed.
Dosing equipment: standard diaphragm, peristaltic or piston metering pumps; for continuous dosing in process lines, flow-controlled injection systems help maintain a constant concentration. Silad B300's low viscosity makes it easy to pump and meter accurately.

Compatibilities and considerations
Silad B300 is compatible with water and aqueous systems, with nonionic and anionic surfactants at typical process concentrations, with moderate acids and bases, and with most ingredients and additives in waterborne industrial formulations. Its nonionic emulsifier ensures stability and effectiveness in the presence of detergents and process surfactants.
It requires precautions or specific verification with: cationic surfactants at high concentration (they can alter the stability of the nonionic emulsion); extreme temperatures during prolonged storage (excessive heat or freezing can cause reversible separation of the emulsion); strong oxidizing agents at high concentration; and very intense, prolonged shear. In coatings and systems sensitive to silicone-related surface defects, evaluate the dosage level or consider the silicone-free alternative (Silad AF100).
Package sizes, storage and shelf life
Package sizes: Silad B300 is available in 200 kg drums and in bulk on request for large industrial consumption. Ask about availability of 20 kg pails and 1,000 kg IBCs (totes) for specific volumes.
Storage: to ensure product quality, the container should remain tightly closed when not in use. Store in a dry, ventilated place at a controlled room temperature (ideally between 5 and 40 °C), away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or freezing, which can cause the product to separate. Do not freeze; in case of accidental freezing, warm gradually to room temperature, stir gently and check visual stability before use. In case of separation: if frozen, thaw at room temperature; stir the contents to reincorporate the phases; use as usual. Reversible separation does not compromise performance once the product has been homogenized.
Shelf life: under proper storage conditions, the typical shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture. The official expiration date is shown on the original container and on the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the corresponding lot. If the product has been standing for long periods, gently agitate the container before use to restore the homogeneity of the emulsion.
Safety, handling and regulatory considerations
Silad B300 should be handled according to the recommendations in its current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). As general good practice for industrial handling, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended: chemical safety goggles, industrial gloves (nitrile or equivalent), appropriate work clothing and work in adequately ventilated areas. Wash hands and arms after handling the product.
Spill management: antifoam spills are slippery and pose a fall hazard. Contain with inert absorbents (vermiculite, sand, absorbent pads), collect and dispose of according to current waste regulations, and wash the area with water and detergent to remove residues.
GHS classification, hazard statements (H phrases) and precautionary statements: this section is only a general handling guide. The full classification under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), hazard statements, precautionary statements, first aid and labeling in accordance with NOM-018-STPS-2015 must be taken from the product's current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which is supplied with every delivery. Always consult the updated SDS before use.
Silad B300 versus other antifoams — selection guide
Silad B300 (silicone emulsion, 20% active) vs. organic antifoams: silicone antifoams such as Silad B300 offer greater efficiency at very low doses, fast and persistent action, and excellent stability over a wide pH and temperature range. Organic antifoams typically require higher doses and offer less durability, although they are the choice when the system does not tolerate silicone.
Silad B300 vs. Silad B700 (silicone, 100% active): B300 is a ready-to-use, low-viscosity, easy-to-dose emulsion, ideal for direct incorporation into aqueous systems; B700 is a 100% active silicone concentrate that goes further per unit of mass and serves as a base for preparing custom dilutions and emulsions. The choice depends on whether you prefer a ready-to-dose emulsion (B300) or a maximum-active concentrate (B700).
Silad B300 vs. generic, unspecified antifoams: Silad B300 guarantees specified active content, viscosity, pH and density, lot-to-lot consistency, in-house manufacturing and complete regulatory documentation, compared with generic products of variable quality and traceability.

What is the difference between a silicone antifoam and an organic-based one?
Silicone antifoams such as Silad B300 work at lower concentrations than organic-based ones (oils, esters, non-silicone polymers), because PDMS has an intrinsically lower surface tension that lets it break the foam-liquid interface very efficiently; it is also chemically inert and highly durable in the system. Organic antifoams (such as Silad AF100) are preferable when the process or product does not tolerate silicone —for example, certain coatings and silicone-sensitive applications—. For general industrial use, silicone offers the best performance per dose.
Is Silad B300 compatible with effluent treatment systems?
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is generally recognized as a polymer of low aquatic toxicity and, when dosed within the recommended ranges, does not usually cause significant interference in activated sludge processes. To verify exact compatibility with your treatment plant, we recommend running tests (for example, respirometry) or requesting advice from our technical team.
Is it available in concentrations other than 20%?
Silad B300 is our standard formulation with 20% active dimethicone (PDMS). Thanks to our custom formulation capability and our own R&D laboratory, we can develop higher- or lower-concentration versions, with different emulsifier bases or an adjusted pH profile for specific applications.
