At Quimiconsult we manufacture Silad AF100, a concentrated organic-based, silicone-free antifoam developed in our own R&D laboratory and produced under a certified SQF (Safe Quality Food) quality management system at our plant in Monterrey, Nuevo León. Silad AF100 is a slightly yellow liquid with a high active content (minimum 100% active solids), easy to handle and high-yielding, formulated to eliminate existing foam (defoaming action) and prevent its formation (antifoam action) in a wide variety of aqueous and non-aqueous industrial processes, without compromising the quality of the final product or the performance of the treated system.
Unlike conventional silicone-derived antifoams, Silad AF100 takes advantage of the compatibility of its organic formulation to integrate more easily into systems where silicone residues could be problematic: coatings and paints where silicone causes surface defects (craters, fisheyes, poor leveling, recoating and adhesion problems), processes where silicone carryover interferes with analyses or downstream stages, and applications where process purity and finished-product compatibility are priorities. It is the Silad family option recommended when the process requires or prefers a silicone-free antifoam. We guarantee batch-to-batch consistency, complete regulatory documentation, custom formulation capability and on-site technical support, with availability from Monterrey and shipping throughout Mexico.
Foam is one of the costliest and most underestimated operational problems in industry: it reduces the effective capacity of tanks, reactors and evaporators; causes overflows, product losses and downtime for extra cleaning; lowers oxygen transfer efficiency in water treatment plants; affects filling and dosing accuracy; and compromises the quality and homogeneity of formulations. Silad AF100 tackles this problem with a high-performance organic antifoam that works at a controlled dose, is easy to incorporate and adds no silicone to the medium, making it especially valuable in applications where silicones are restricted or undesirable.
For anyone looking for how to eliminate foam in an industrial process without using silicone, an organic-based antifoam, a silicone-free antifoam for water-based paints and coatings, an organic defoamer for wastewater treatment, an antifoam for agrochemicals, an antifoam for food and beverage processes, or a concentrated silicone-free foam suppressant made in Mexico, Silad AF100 is the technical answer in the Quimiconsult catalog, with an R&D laboratory, complete regulatory documentation and direct advice on dosing and evaluating the product in each process.
Silad AF100 among foam control technologies
Broadly speaking, antifoams fall into three major technology families: silicone-based antifoams (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS), polyalkylene glycol-based antifoams (EO/PO copolymers) and organic antifoams based on oils, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, esters and dispersed hydrophobic particles. Each family offers a different balance of efficiency, dosage, durability and compatibility, and the right choice depends on the system, pH, temperature, the type of surfactants present and, critically, whether or not the finished product tolerates silicone.
Silad AF100 belongs to the category of concentrated organic-based, silicone-free antifoams. Compared with silicone antifoams—which offer maximum potency at very low doses—organic antifoams such as Silad AF100 are the option of choice precisely in processes where silicone is contraindicated or where better compatibility with the finished product is required: paints and coatings sensitive to surface defects, systems where silicone-free status is required by customer or downstream-process specification, and applications (cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical processing) where the interaction of silicone with the matrix could be problematic. In these scenarios, a high-active organic antifoam delivers the necessary foam control without the risks associated with silicone.
Supplying Silad AF100 as a high-active organic concentrate allows it to be dosed directly or prepared in custom dilutions according to the application, optimizing cost per process and making it easy to incorporate using standard dosing pumps.
The Silad family at Quimiconsult — silicone, organic-based and powder antifoams
Quimiconsult offers the Silad family of antifoams, which covers the main foam control technologies and formats so each plant can select the optimal product for its system, its regulatory grade and its tolerance to silicone:
- Silad AF100 (organic-based, silicone-free) — the product described on this page: a high-active concentrated organic antifoam for industrial applications where the absence of silicone is required or preferred.
- Silad B700 (silicone, 100% active) — a 100% active concentrated silicone (PDMS) antifoam for wastewater treatment, alkaline cleaners, industrial CIP cleaning and recirculation systems.
- Silad B300 and Silad B600 (silicone emulsion, 20% active) — low-viscosity liquid silicone emulsion antifoams for easy incorporation into aqueous systems.
- Silad 210 and Silad 210 FG (silicone emulsion, 10% active) — silicone emulsion foam control agents; the 210 FG version is food grade and kosher, made in an SQF plant.
- Silad Powder FG (silicone powder, food grade) — food-grade powdered antifoam for dry mixes and food processes.
- Silad X100 and Silad X700 (for non-aqueous / oil systems) — concentrated antifoams for non-aqueous systems and oil applications.
Practical selection criterion: if your process or finished product does not tolerate silicone, or if you are specifically looking for a silicone-free organic antifoam, the family's choice is Silad AF100. If the system tolerates silicone and you want maximum potency at the minimum dose, the silicone versions (B700, B300, B600, 210) offer the best performance per unit of mass. For applications with direct food contact, the food-grade versions (210 FG, Powder FG) are used. If in doubt, our technical team can guide you and support the laboratory evaluation.
How does Silad AF100 work? — Mechanism of action of an organic antifoam
Silad AF100 controls foam through the physical mechanism characteristic of organic antifoams, which combines the low surface tension and insolubility of its active components in the foaming medium to destabilize and break the films that hold bubbles together.
When foam forms, gas bubbles are stabilized by thin liquid films (lamellae) reinforced by the surfactants present. Once dosed and incorporated into the system, the hydrophobic components of Silad AF100—insoluble in the aqueous phase and with a lower surface tension than the foaming solution—migrate to the air-liquid interface of the bubbles, enter the lamella, locally displace the surfactants that stabilize it and create points of discontinuity (the "entering and bridging" mechanism) that weaken the film. The lamella thins under capillary forces until it ruptures mechanically, the bubble collapses and the gas is released, without leaving residues that affect the process.
This process works on two fronts at once: defoaming action, which breaks already formed foam quickly and precisely, and antifoam action, which prevents new foam from forming by remaining dispersed in the system. To maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness, Silad AF100 performs best when it is predispersed and dosed in advance, at a stage before intense foam formation. Unlike silicone antifoams, it adds no polydimethylsiloxane to the medium, so it does not cause the surface defects or the recoating, adhesion or wetting problems that residual silicone can cause in coatings, inks and adhesives.
AF100 technical profile and main features
Silad AF100 has been designed with an optimized concentration that allows it to be used at reduced doses, maximizing cost-effectiveness without sacrificing efficiency. Every batch is produced under strict quality controls at our facilities in Mexico, ensuring consistency and reproducibility.
- Silicone-free organic base: a formulation suitable for silicone-sensitive systems, with no PDMS carryover or associated surface defects.
- High active content (minimum 100%): a concentrated product, effective at low doses, that reduces consumption per production cycle and allows custom dilutions.
- Broad compatibility: works in aqueous, alkaline and slightly acidic media, and with nonionic and anionic process surfactants.
- Fast knockdown action: collapses the foam layer precisely and without forming residues.
- Dual defoaming and antifoam action: breaks existing foam and prevents new foam from forming, with prolonged activity after application.
- Entrained air control: in addition to surface foam, it helps release entrapped air, improving density, filling and product quality.
- No organoleptic impact at use levels: when correctly dosed, it adds no detectable color, odor or taste, a relevant property in sensitive processes.
- In-house manufacturing under SQF: traceability and batch-to-batch consistency, with supporting documentation (COA per batch, TDS, SDS).
Industries and applications where Silad AF100 makes the difference
Silad AF100 is a versatile organic antifoam, tested and field-proven in many production sectors. Our technical team carries out installation and inspection visits directly at the customer's plant, ensuring the dosage and application point are optimized for each process. Suitability and dosage for each case must be validated under the customer's specific conditions.
Water-based paints, coatings, inks and adhesives
This is the application where the silicone-free nature of Silad AF100 adds the most value. In the manufacture of latex paints (acrylic, vinyl, styrene-acrylic), water-based protective and decorative coatings, water-based printing inks, overprint varnishes and water-based adhesives, emulsifying surfactants, dispersants and coalescents generate foam and entrapped air during mixing, grinding, pumping and packaging, causing filling problems, pinholes and defects in the applied film. Silad AF100 effectively controls this foam and releases entrained air without introducing silicone, avoiding the surface defects (craters, fisheyes, poor leveling, loss of gloss, recoating and adhesion problems) that silicone antifoams can cause in these systems.
Food and beverage industry (processing)
On food and beverage processing lines, foam generation can stop equipment, carry product over and reduce tank capacity. Thanks to its organic base, Silad AF100 is an alternative for foam control in cooking, evaporation, pasteurization, CIP cleaning and process fermentation systems, without adding silicone and with no organoleptic impact at use levels. Important: Silad AF100 is an industrial grade antifoam; for applications with direct or indirect food contact, the family's food grade versions (Silad 210 FG or Silad Powder FG, made in an SQF, kosher plant) must be used. Suitability for each food application depends on the applicable regulations, the end use and the use concentration; our technical team evaluates each case and recommends the right grade.
Animal health and nutrition
Manufacturing processes for balanced feed, supplements and premixes generate foam during wet mixing, liquid formulation and anaerobic digestion stages. Silad AF100 acts quickly in these environments, helping preserve process integrity. Its organic origin reduces the possibility of interaction with nutritional ingredients, and for applications with specific grade requirements we recommend validating with our technical team.
Industrial and institutional cleaning
In the manufacture of detergents, disinfectants and hygiene products, controlling foam during production is as important as controlling foam in end use. Silad AF100 works effectively in high-viscosity formulations and high-speed mixing systems, where excess foam causes product losses, filling inaccuracy or equipment damage, and it is a silicone-free organic alternative for formulators who need one.
Agrochemical industry
In the production of suspension concentrates, emulsifiable concentrates, suspoemulsions and liquid formulations, foam interferes with filling, homogenization and product stability. Silad AF100 delivers antifoam efficiency without altering the biological activity of the active ingredients or the physicochemical stability of the final formulation, both as a process antifoam and incorporated into the formulation to control foam in the farmer's spray tank.
Personal care and cosmetics (manufacturing processes)
The emulsifiers, surfactants and viscosity agents in shampoos, creams, gels and other personal care products generate foam during production. Silad AF100 is compatible with aqueous-phase matrices and O/W emulsions, enabling a cleaner, more efficient manufacturing process, with the advantage of being silicone-free for formulations where silicone is undesirable. For applications with regulatory requirements for the finished cosmetic product, check the appropriate grade and documentation with our technical team.
Industrial water and wastewater treatment
In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), aeration tanks, activated sludge systems, bioreactors, dissolved air flotation (DAF) and clarifiers, the presence of surfactants, proteins, oils and organic matter generates foam that reduces oxygen transfer efficiency, causes overflows and hampers operation. Silad AF100 controls this foam, keeping operation stable and preserving usable tank capacity, and is an organic alternative for facilities that prefer to keep silicone out of their water streams.
Industrial chemical processes and fermentation
Silad AF100 is used as a process antifoam in intensively agitated reactors, emulsion polymerization (latex and aqueous polymers), liquid-liquid extraction, evaporation and concentration of solutions, and in industrial fermentation processes (production of enzymes, organic acids, biopolymers and non-food bio-inputs), where intense agitation and aeration generate foam that reduces the equipment's usable capacity and can cause carryover.
Other process applications
Given the versatility of organic antifoams, Silad AF100 can be evaluated in the pulp and paper industry, textile processing, construction chemicals (additives for concrete, mortars, grouts and latex-based systems), water-soluble cutting fluids, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry processes (as a processing aid, subject to regulatory validation of the final product) and, in general, any aqueous industrial process where foam is a problem and a silicone-free alternative is sought.

Dosing guide and application best practices
Suggested starting dose (technical data sheet): Silad AF100 is recommended at a starting dosage range of 0.3 to 1.5% (w/w) of the foaming system. Because it is a concentrate, small additions produce significant results, and once the foam is under control, maintenance doses can be reduced according to how the process evolves. The exact dose depends on the nature and requirements of the system, the type and concentration of surfactants, temperature, pH, agitation intensity and residence time, and is best determined through laboratory testing. We recommend starting at the low end of the range and adjusting until the desired control is achieved, optimizing dosage and cost.
Directions for use:
- Pre-dilution: in systems where direct addition could create high-concentration spots, pre-dilute AF100 in a portion of the process liquid before adding it, stirring gently until homogeneous.
- Addition point: add it in advance, in the area of greatest turbulence or just before the equipment where the critical foam is generated; preventive dosing is more efficient than reactive dosing.
- Dosing equipment: diaphragm, peristaltic or piston dosing pumps; for continuous lines, flow-controlled injection systems.
- Continuous monitoring: adjust the maintenance dose according to how the process evolves; our technical team can help you define application protocols and run plant trials.
Compatibilities and considerations
Silad AF100 is compatible with water and aqueous systems, with nonionic and anionic surfactants at typical process concentrations, and with most ingredients and additives in water-based industrial formulations. Because of its silicone-free organic nature, it is especially suitable for systems where silicone is restricted.
It requires precautions or specific verification with: cationic surfactants at high concentrations; extreme temperatures during prolonged storage (excessive heat or freezing can affect homogeneity); strong oxidizing agents; and very intense, prolonged shear. As with any antifoam, we recommend running a compatibility and performance test under the system's real conditions before scale-up.
Packaging, storage and shelf life
Package sizes: Silad AF100 is available in 20 kg pails, 200 kg drums and 1,000 kg IBCs (totes). For high-volume projects we can arrange continuous supply terms; check availability and lead times with your account manager.
Storage: keep in the original container, tightly closed when not in use, at controlled room temperature, in a ventilated place away from direct heat sources, sunlight and strong oxidizing materials. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures that could affect the product's homogeneity; if separation occurs, homogenize with gentle stirring before use. Rotate inventory on a FIFO (first in, first out) basis.
Shelf life: the official expiration date and shelf-life conditions are shown on the original container and on the Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the corresponding batch; check them to make sure the product is used within its validity period.
Safety, handling and regulatory considerations
Silad AF100 should be handled following the recommendations in its current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). As general good industrial handling practice, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended: chemical safety goggles, industrial gloves (nitrile or equivalent), appropriate work clothing and work in adequately ventilated areas. Wash hands and arms after handling the product.
Spill handling: antifoam spills can be slippery and pose a fall hazard. Contain with inert absorbents (vermiculite, sand, absorbent pads), collect and dispose of in accordance with current waste regulations, and wash the area with water and detergent.
GHS classification, hazard statements (H phrases) and precautionary statements: this section is only a general guide. The full classification under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), hazard statements, precautionary statements, first aid and labeling in accordance with NOM-018-STPS-2015 must be taken from the product's current Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which is supplied with every delivery.
