NF 70 Description — Nonylphenol Ethoxylate with 70 Moles of Ethylene Oxide (Extremely Hydrophilic Nonionic Surfactant)
At Quimiconsult we offer NF 70, also known as nonylphenol ethoxylate 70 moles, nonylphenol with 70 units of ethylene oxide, NP-70, NPE-70, nonoxynol-70 or nonyl phenol 70 EO, an industrial grade nonionic surfactant with a very high HLB (extreme hydrophilicity) made from a nonylphenol molecule with 70 units of ethylene oxide. It is the grade with the highest ethoxylation and highest HLB in the NF family (around 18 to 19), which gives it extreme hydrophilicity and irreplaceable performance as a maximum-efficiency protective colloid and steric stabilizer, very high HLB emulsifier and stabilizer for demanding aqueous systems, especially in emulsion polymerization and in applications that require the greatest electrolyte tolerance and colloidal stability.
It is typically supplied as a light-colored, nonionic waxy solid (flake, pastille or paste) or, depending on the grade, as an aqueous solution. It acts as a protective colloid, steric stabilizer, very high HLB O/W emulsifier, solubilizer and dispersant, with excellent compatibility with most anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants, and high tolerance to hard water and electrolytes thanks to its long ethylene oxide chain. Within the NF family, the 70-mole grade holds the position of maximum hydrophilicity and maximum steric stabilization, complementing NF 30 (high HLB solubilizer), NF 10 M (the most versatile) and NF 4 M (the lipophilic one).
At Quimiconsult, located in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León, we manufacture and distribute NF 70 nationwide, with formulation technical support, batch certificates of analysis, technical data sheet (TDS) and safety data sheet (HDS/SDS) in accordance with NOM-018-STPS-2015 / GHS, serving emulsion polymerization (latex) plants, agrochemical formulators, paint and coatings manufacturers, industrial cleaner producers and product developers throughout Mexico. Unlike a distributor, we have our own R&D laboratory to adjust the degree of ethoxylation or the formulation to suit your application.
What is an extremely hydrophilic nonionic surfactant and how is nonylphenol 70 moles identified?
A nonionic surfactant is a surface-active molecule that does not dissociate into ions when dissolved in water. Its structure combines a hydrophobic chain (the nonylphenol ring) with a hydrophilic ethylene oxide chain; the more moles, the higher the hydrophilicity and HLB. With 70 moles, NF 70 reaches the highest HLB in the family (~18 – 19) and extreme hydrophilicity, making it the most powerful steric stabilizer and protective colloid in the line, and a very high HLB emulsifier for the most demanding systems.
Nonylphenol 70 moles is referred to by various technical and search names: NF 70, NF-70, NP-70, NPE-70, nonylphenol ethoxylate 70 moles, nonyl phenol 70 moles, nonylphenol 70 EO, nonylphenol 70 OE, nonoxynol-70, POE (70) nonylphenol, alkylphenol ethoxylate 70 moles. It is the grade sought by formulators who need maximum steric stabilization, the greatest electrolyte tolerance or an extremely hydrophilic protective colloid.
Trade names and reference equivalents for nonylphenol 70 moles
Nonylphenol ethoxylate with 70 moles is sold on the international market under various brands from different manufacturers. Formulators who already work with any of these products can place Quimiconsult's NF 70 as a nonionic surfactant of the same family and degree of ethoxylation (nonylphenol with ~70 moles of ethylene oxide, CAS 9016-45-9). Reference brands under which this type of product is known include:

Why 70 moles: classifying nonylphenol ethoxylates by degree of ethoxylation
The number of moles of ethylene oxide determines the HLB of the nonylphenol ethoxylate and, therefore, its solubility and ideal application:
- 4 moles (NF 4 M): low HLB (~8 – 9), lipophilic; W/O emulsifier.
- 10 moles (NF 10 M): intermediate-high HLB (~12 – 13); the most versatile, O/W emulsifier and detergent.
- 30 moles (NF 30): high HLB (~17 – 18); maximum-efficiency solubilizer and O/W emulsifier.
- 70 moles (NF 70 — this page): very high HLB (~18 – 19), extreme hydrophilicity; maximum-efficiency protective colloid and steric stabilizer, very high HLB emulsifier, for the most demanding systems.
NF 70 is the choice when maximum steric stabilization, the greatest electrolyte tolerance or an extremely hydrophilic protective colloid is required; it is combined with less ethoxylated grades to fine-tune the system's HLB.
The NF family at Quimiconsult
Quimiconsult manufactures and distributes the complete family of nonylphenol ethoxylates: NF 4 moles (lipophilic, W/O emulsifier), NF 10 M (the most versatile), NF 30 (high HLB solubilizer) and NF 70 (extremely hydrophilic protective colloid — this page). Combining grades to adjust the formulation's HLB is standard practice in industrial and agrochemical emulsions.
How does NF 70 work?
The NF 70 molecule has an amphiphilic structure with a hydrophobic tail (nonylphenol core) and a very long hydrophilic chain (70 units of ethylene oxide). This long ethylene oxide chain gives it extreme hydrophilicity (HLB ~18 – 19) and a large hydration layer, which is the basis of its performance:
As a protective colloid and steric stabilizer, it adsorbs onto particles, droplets and polymer nuclei, forming a bulky hydrated layer that prevents coalescence, coagulation and agglomeration through steric hindrance —the critical function in emulsion polymerization, where it provides maximum latex stability, even in the presence of electrolytes—. As a very high HLB O/W emulsifier, it stabilizes fine oil droplets in the aqueous phase in systems that require a very high HLB. As a solubilizer and dispersant, it keeps hydrophobic substances and solids stable in aqueous media. Its long ethoxylated chain also gives it the greatest tolerance to hard water and electrolytes in the NF family.
Industrial applications of NF 70
Suitability and dosage for each case must be validated under the customer's specific conditions.
Emulsion and suspension polymerization (latex and resins)
This is NF 70's flagship application. It is used as a maximum-efficiency protective colloid and steric stabilizer in the emulsion polymerization of vinyl and acrylic monomers (vinyl acetate, acrylics, styrene-acrylics, vinyl-VeoVa) to produce latex dispersions and resins, where it provides the greatest colloidal stability, prevents coagulation during reaction and storage, improves the latex's electrolyte tolerance and helps control particle size. Its extreme hydrophilicity makes it the grade of choice when maximum steric stabilization is required.
Very high HLB emulsions and dispersions
NF 70 is used as a very high HLB O/W emulsifier and stabilizer in demanding industrial emulsions and dispersions, where less ethoxylated grades cannot achieve the required stability, and in systems with a high electrolyte or solids load.
Agrochemical industry
As the maximum-HLB hydrophilic component of the emulsifier system in agrochemical formulations (EC, SC), and as a highly hydrophilic stabilizer and dispersant in suspension concentrates (SC), wettable powders (WP) and water-dispersible granules (WG), where it provides colloidal stability and electrolyte tolerance.
Paints, coatings and industrial cleaning
As a stabilizer for polymer emulsions (latex) and pigment dispersions in waterborne paints and coatings, and as a high-efficiency solubilizer and hydrotrope in concentrated cleaners and demanding aqueous formulations.
Competitive advantages, dosage and compatibility of NF 70
NF 70 offers the highest HLB in the family (~18 – 19), maximum steric stabilization and the greatest tolerance to electrolytes and hard water, universal compatibility with anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants, and stability over a wide pH range. The dosage varies by application (typically as part of the stabilizer/emulsifier system, around 0.5 – 5% in emulsion polymerization and 1 – 15% in formulation systems, to be validated by testing). When supplied in solid form, slight heating or prior dissolution in water may be required for incorporation; it is recommended to add it to the aqueous phase under moderate stirring. It is compatible with water, alcohols, glycols, most surfactants, acids and bases over a wide range, and salts; caution is required with strong oxidizers at high concentration.
Storage, safety and regulatory considerations for NF 70
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, in the original closed container, protected from direct sunlight, moisture and extreme temperatures. Handle with the recommended PPE (safety goggles, nitrile or neoprene gloves, appropriate clothing). Direct contact may cause skin and eye irritation; in case of contact, rinse with plenty of water.
Environmental and regulatory considerations: like the entire family of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE/NPE), NF 70 has an aquatic toxicity profile that requires careful management of effluents and waste, avoiding direct discharge into bodies of water. Nonylphenol ethoxylates are subject to different regulatory frameworks depending on the market (with progressive restrictions in the European Union and certain use categories in the United States), while in Mexico and many other markets they remain a standard industrial raw material authorized for the uses described. For applications intended for markets with restrictive regulations, we recommend checking current regulations and consulting our technical team about APE-free alternatives such as fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AE). The full GHS classification, H statements and first aid measures must be taken from the product's current SDS. Each batch is accompanied by a CoA, TDS and HDS/SDS.
Frequently asked questions about NF 70
What is NF 70 and what is it used for?
NF 70 is a very high HLB (~18 – 19) nonionic surfactant consisting of a nonylphenol molecule with 70 units of ethylene oxide. It is the extremely hydrophilic grade of the NF family; it is used as a maximum-efficiency protective colloid and steric stabilizer (especially in emulsion polymerization), as a very high HLB O/W emulsifier and as a solubilizer and stabilizer for demanding aqueous systems.
How does NF 70 differ from NF 30?
Both are high HLB and hydrophilic, but NF 70 (70 moles, HLB ~18 – 19) has greater hydrophilicity and steric stabilization capacity than NF 30 (30 moles, HLB ~17 – 18). NF 70 is the choice when maximum colloidal stabilization and the greatest electrolyte tolerance are required; NF 30 is a more general-purpose high-efficiency solubilizer and O/W emulsifier.
Why is NF 70 preferred in emulsion polymerization?
Because its extremely long ethylene oxide chain forms a bulky hydrated layer that sterically stabilizes polymer particles, preventing coagulation and providing maximum latex stability, even in the presence of electrolytes.
Is NF 70 a solid or a liquid?
Because of its very high degree of ethoxylation, NF 70 is usually supplied as a waxy solid (flake, pastille or paste) or, depending on the grade, as an aqueous solution. Ask our team about the available presentation.
