Iodine Teat Sealant for the Prevention of Bovine Mastitis at Dry-Off and Postpartum

Iodactive S100 is an iodine-based intramammary teat sealant developed by Quimiconsult to help protect cows during the dry period and the immediate postpartum period, the two windows of highest risk for intramammary infection. Its formulation is designed to act as a physical barrier in the teat canal, combining the occlusive effect of the sealant with the antiseptic action of iodine, with the aim of hindering the entry of pathogens associated with clinical and subclinical mastitis.

Unlike simple intramammary sealants, which work solely through mechanical occlusion, Iodactive S100 incorporates an iodine component within the sealant matrix, offering dual protection that is especially useful in herds with high environmental infection pressure or a history of new infections during the dry period.

How Iodactive S100 Works: Physical Barrier and Iodine Action

The protective mechanism of Iodactive S100 operates on two mutually reinforcing levels:

  • Occlusive sealing of the teat canal: when applied at the start of the dry period or at the end of milking, the product forms a viscous plug inside the canal, helping to physically block access by environmental bacteria frequently associated with mastitis in dry cows, such as Streptococcus uberis, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp.
  • Antiseptic activity of iodine: the iodine component provides contact germicidal action on the skin and tissue of the teat canal, helping to reduce the bacterial load in the area and to hinder colonization from the outside.
  • Persistence in the canal: the sealant matrix is formulated to remain in the teat canal throughout the protection period, without requiring additional removal procedures beyond milking or colostrum stripping at calving.

This combination of mechanical barrier and iodine action makes Iodactive S100 a supporting tool within mastitis health management programs in herds of any size.

Directions for Use: When and How to Apply Iodactive S100 Sealant

Application at dry-off

Iodactive S100 is most useful at the transition to the dry period. After the last milking, once dry cow therapy has been administered when indicated by the veterinarian (intramammary antibiotic), the sealant can be applied as an additional layer of protection. Combining dry cow therapy with a sealant is standard practice in modern mastitis control programs.

Use in the immediate postpartum period

During the first hours and days after calving, the teat sphincter may remain dilated due to the calving process and the onset of lactation, which represents a window of increased susceptibility. Applying the sealant at this stage can help reduce the risk of environmental mastitis in the periparturient period, complementing—not replacing—teat disinfection and environmental hygiene protocols.

High-risk cows

Animals with a history of recurrent mastitis, elevated somatic cell counts (SCC) at the end of lactation or damage to the teat sphincter may benefit from Iodactive S100 as part of a differentiated dry-off management protocol, at the veterinarian's discretion. Its iodine action is broad-spectrum, covering both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Protocol selection, antibiotic indication and suitability for each animal must always be determined under the supervision of the herd's attending veterinarian.

Iodactive S100 vs. Simple Sealants: Advantages of the Iodine Formulation

Intramammary sealants without an active ingredient work exclusively through mechanical occlusion. When environmental infection pressure is high, or when there are minor lesions in the teat canal, the physical barrier alone may have limitations. Iodactive S100 was formulated to add value in those situations:

  • Greater coverage in environments with a high bacterial load: the antiseptic activity of iodine complements the mechanical barrier where it falls short.
  • Action from first contact: iodine exerts its germicidal effect upon application, without waiting for the seal to be completed.
  • Versatility across management systems: compatible with both selective dry cow therapy and blanket dry-off of the whole herd.
  • Support in reducing new intramammary infections (NIMI): sealants with an active ingredient are used in programs aimed at reducing NIMI rates during the dry period compared with simple sealants.
  • No antibiotics in its formulation: because it contains no antimicrobials, Iodactive S100 does not create antibiotic withdrawal periods. However, the iodine-in-milk limits applicable to each market must be taken into account.

Manufactured in Mexico with Direct On-Farm Technical Support

Iodactive S100 is a product developed and manufactured in Mexico by Quimiconsult, a company with more than 30 years of experience in chemical formulation for the animal health and nutrition industry. We are not a distributor: we are the laboratory that designed and optimized the formula based on applied research into bovine production conditions in Latin America.

What sets Quimiconsult apart from a conventional supplier:

  • In-house R&D laboratory: the iodine sealant formulation was developed internally and can be adapted to specific requirements for viscosity, active iodine concentration or compatibility with each herd's particular protocols.
  • Field technical team: our specialists carry out installation visits, milking staff training and results follow-up directly on the farm.
  • Custom formulation: we develop adapted versions of the sealant for customers with specific needs, such as integration with an existing health program or adjustment of physicochemical characteristics.
  • Reliable domestic manufacturing: 100% produced in Mexico, with batch-by-batch analytical quality control and lead times that do not depend on imports.

Integrating Iodactive S100 into Mastitis Health Programs

Iodactive S100 delivers its greatest value as part of a comprehensive mastitis control program that includes somatic cell count (SCC) monitoring, teat hygiene, milking equipment maintenance and risk-based dry cow therapy. We recommend integrating it according to the following principles, always with veterinary advice:

  • Risk-based selective dry-off: cows with low SCC and no history of clinical mastitis during lactation may be candidates, at the veterinarian's discretion, for antibiotic-free dry-off using the sealant as the intervention. This supports responsible antimicrobial use programs and simplifies management.
  • Blanket dry-off: in cows with elevated SCC, recurrent clinical mastitis or positive cultures at the end of lactation, the sealant is applied as a complement to the intramammary antibiotic therapy prescribed by the veterinarian, providing an additional layer of protection during the weeks following dry-off.

Available Presentations and Storage Conditions

Iodactive S100 is available in presentations designed for both family farms and industrial-scale operations:

  • Single-dose intramammary syringes: for direct, controlled application at dry-off or postpartum, helping to prevent cross-contamination between animals.
  • Multi-dose containers for institutional use: for high-volume operations under strict biosecurity protocols.
  • Storage conditions: store between 5 °C and 25 °C, protected from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not freeze. Keep containers closed until use.
  • Shelf life: see the expiration date indicated on the package. Do not use the product after it has expired.

For larger volumes or continuous supply arrangements, our sales team can design a supply agreement tailored to the herd's dry-off calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions about Iodactive S100 Intramammary Sealant

Does Iodactive S100 replace the intramammary antibiotic at dry-off?

Not necessarily; it depends on each cow's risk profile and the veterinarian's judgment. In selective dry-off protocols, low-risk cows can be managed with the sealant without antibiotics; in high-risk cows, the combination of intramammary antibiotic plus sealant is usually the recommended standard. Our technical team can support the implementation of the protocol.

How long does the sealant remain in the teat canal?

The formulation is designed to remain in the canal throughout the dry period. Stripping colostrum or milk at calving removes the product naturally, without requiring additional removal procedures. Persistence time may vary from animal to animal; consult the package information and your veterinarian.

Does Iodactive S100 leave residues in milk?

Because it contains no antibiotics, it does not impose an antibiotic withdrawal period. However, iodine levels in milk must remain within the maximum limits set by the regulations in force in each market. Consult your official veterinarian and our technical team for a complete assessment.

Is it compatible with external iodine pre-dipping and post-dipping teat sealants?

Yes. Iodactive S100 is an intramammary sealant, and its use does not interfere with the external teat sealing (dipping) protocols used during active lactation. Both are part of a complementary health program.
