Chlorhexidine gluconate 20%, USP biocide grade. Slightly amber liquid, broad-spectrum cationic antimicrobial, belonging to the biguanide family. Its mechanism of action involves destabilization of the bacterial outer membrane. 100% soluble in water, glacial acetic acid, acetone, and alcohol (although it may present turbidity with the latter two). Applications: topical antiseptic and disinfectant for wound healing, in dentistry, and in surgical gowns. Properties: active content (HPLC) between 19.0–21.0%, pH 5.5–7.0 (1% solution), specific gravity 1.06–1.07, with controlled maximum impurities such as chlorhexidine guanidine (max. 1.0%) and chlorhexidine dimer (max. 0.5%).
